The Madhavan Pillai Foundation Award 2013 for Vava Suresh

The Madhavan Pillai Foundation for Conservation is pleased to announce that Sri. Vava Suresh has been declared as the winner of this year’s ( Smt. Maneka Gandhi, MP, Chairperson of People For Animals shall hand over the award to Sri.Vava Suresh in a private function organised at Sri Mulam Club, Trivandrum on the 10 Nov 2013 evening at 6.15 pm in the presence of an invited gathering of artists, academics, administrators and the media. Sri. Vava Suresh will be introduced to the audience by Sri.K.Muraleedharan.MLA. Sri. Mari, Protection watcher from Silent Valley National Park and the recipient of the Madhavan Pillai Foundation Conservation Award for 2012 will also be honoured by Smt. Maneka Gandhi. The other winners of this prestigious award were Sri. Bal Pandi, bird watcher of Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu for 2010 and Sri.G.Kannan, anti-poaching watcher of Periyar Tiger Reserve for the year 2011.2013) Madhavan Pillai Foundation Conservation Award. The award, which carries a prize money of Rs. 1,00,000/= is the highestaward in India for field persons working on protection of our endangered flora and fauna. Vava, a snake rescuer with decades of experience has caught and released thousands of snakes, dozensof them being the King Cobras, which would otherwise have been brutally killed by people. He hasalso used his knowledge about the snakes to bridge the gap between society and the reptileswhich are both feared and hated equally by many. As per his own assessment he has caught morethan 30,000 snakes so far in his career spanning more than two decades, got bitten more than 200times and has caught and released 38 King Cobras.

The Green Sign Campaign which was flagged off by Dr. Shashi Tharoor MP during the Hayfest 2012 will also conclude on the evening of 10 Nov 2013, in which 3 large canvas prints of wildlife images which were endorsed with their signatures by 101 celebrities from the fields of art, literature, cinema, sports, media, management etc. Sri. P.D.Sarangadharan, Secretary, Kerala Legislature Assembly would be accepting these Green Canvases on behalf of the Hon. Speaker of Kerala. These images shall be displayed at prominent locations in the Kerala Legislature Complex to remind the policy makers about their responsibility to nature while taking decisions or forming laws. One canvas will be accepted by Sri. Sajeev Krishnan, Managing Director of SBT. Some of the signatories who endorsed this campaign are Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mammooty, Shashi Tharoor, Sugatha Kumari, Vikram Seth, Tharun Thejpal, P.T.Usha, M.T.Vasudevan Nair etc

Smt. Maneka Gandhi shall be available at the venue to meet the representatives of the media for an informal chat or interview from 05.30 pm to 06.15 pm.
